The fungus Erysiphe graminis causes powdery mildew to occur in turf grass. It primarily affects Kentucky bluegrass, fine fescue and Bermuda grass. Disease can occur anytime during spring through fall.
Signs and Symptoms
First, white to gray powdery growth occurs on leaf surfaces. Leaves may then yellow and thinning may occur.
Favorable Conditions:
Reduced air circulation, high atmospheric humidity, but no free water on leaf surfaces, low light intensity, and an air temperature of sixty-five degrees Fahrenheit favor disease occurrence.
Cultural Prevention and Control
Mowing at high heights can reduce disease occurrence, as well as thinning shade trees as needed.
