Rejuvenation Pruning
Rejuvenation pruning is the most severe type of pruning. It involves the removal of all of the stems of a woody plants to 6-8 inches above ground (in many cases) at one time. Many multi-stemmed shrubs are good candidates for this type of pruning. Mound-type spirea can be rejuvenated every 2-3 years or so to prevent them from becoming overgrown. Forsythia is another great candidate, although flowers will be lost if it is done before they flower in the spring.
