Slugs
Slugs are found in moist, shady conditions that are common in shade gardens. They live on or in the soil and leave a slimy trail as they move. Snails without the shell, slugs vary in size from ¼” to 7” long.
Life Cycle
Slugs reproduce by laying eggs in the spring and early summer months. They damage plants by feeding from early spring to late fall. Immature slugs look similar to adults, except their coloring may not be as defined. Slugs survive the winter as adults.
Control
Slugs feed on many different plants. To help prevent slug damage to your garden plants, reduce the amount of favorable habitats in your garden. This can be done by opening up the garden to light and increasing air movement. Slugs can also be trapped in your garden by placing shallow pans filled with beer or mixtures of sugar, yeast and water. Commercial slug baits may also be used with care, as they may be harmful to pets and children who come into contact with them.
