4 Lawn Care Mistakes You Don’t Want To Make This Fall

If you want a lush, green lawn when spring rolls around, it’s best to begin your preparation in the fall. For a beautiful lawn, avoid making these four lawn care mistakes.

1. Ignoring Leaves

Raking might not be an entirely enjoyable task, but it is a necessary one. If you don’t rake up fallen leaves, your lawn will pay the price. Fallen leaves left on your lawn will smother the grass by preventing sunlight and air. For optimal lawn health, be sure to rake frequently this fall.

2. Using The Wrong Type Of Winterizer

Fall is the optimal time to fertilize your fescue and/or bluegrass lawn. Cooler temperatures mean that grass is growing faster. It is the ideal time to give your lawn the nutrients it needs to recover from summer damage. A winterizer, high in nitrogen, will help your lawn over-winter and green up sooner in the spring. Unfortunately, many fertilizers marketed as ‘winterizers’ have more phosphorus or potassium than nitrogen. Look for something with around 20-25 nitrogen and 0-5 phosphorus and potassium.

3. Forgetting To Mulch

Don’t forget to mulch around trees and in landscape beds this fall! Mulch helps retain heat and moisture and also nurtures soil microbial activity, which keep your ground healthy and nutrient-rich. As an added bonus, mulch can smother weed seeds, helping keep your beds weed free.

4. Mowing With Dull Lawn Mower Blades

Fall is a good time to sharpen your mower blades, since after an entire summer of mowing, your blades could be dull. When you mow with dull blades, the blades don’t cut the grass; they rip it. How can you tell if your blades need to be sharpened? Kneel down and examine your grass blades post-mow. If the leaves don’t have a nice clean cut and they are shabby and shredded, it is time to sharpen those lawn mower blades.
