While mosquitoes can live almost anywhere there is water and heat, they tend to thrive in areas that provide the perfect breeding ground for them – standing water. And with the ever-growing concern over the spread of the Zika virus – which is spread by various species of mosquitoes – it is now more important than ever that people take precautions to prevent mosquitoes from getting a foothold on their property.

With that being said, here are some ways to help eradicate mosquitoes from your property:

• Eliminate Standing Water – Mosquitoes can set up shop and start a breeding regime within the smallest amount of standing water – such as might be stored in a small pot, a trash can lid, or an area of standing water in your yard. Mosquitoes will lay their eggs in any stagnant water that has a food source, such as algae or other insect larvae. The simple act of eliminating vessels or areas of standing water from your property can cause mosquitoes to move on to a more friendly mosquito-family environment.

If your home is on a lake, or if you have a pond on your property, there are still some things you can do to make it harder for mosquitoes to live around your home:

• Reduce Shoreline Vegetation – Once the mosquitoes hatch, they need to take shelter in shoreline plants. If these plants are trimmed or eliminated using an environmentally-safe herbicide, the adult mosquitoes will fly off to the nearest vegetation stand.
• Eliminate Algae – Developing mosquito larvae need algae as a source of nutrition. Using an algaecide eliminates the major food source for the mosquitoes.
• Stir the Waters – If you have a pond on your property, adding pumped-in oxygen that moves the water creates a hostile environment for mosquito breeding. It also makes it harder for algae to grow in your pond, thus reducing a favored food source for mosquito larvae.
