Family-Friendly June & Independence Day Events in the Kansas City Area


Kansas City in the summer time – the Royals are playing, the downtown markets are teeming with happy people, and the sun is shining! Does it get any better than this? In Kansas City, it does – with a host of fun summertime activities aimed to keep adults and kids happy and active, the KC area gets even better in the summer.

Here are some activities that we at Ryan Lawn & Tree think will be especially great!

Sunset Music Festival – June 15 & 22

Held at the north parking lot of Town Center Plaza, this free family concert series includes live music entertainment, inflatables, face painting, chalk art contests, and more kid-oriented activities. The event opens at 6pm, with music starting at 7pm. Food is also available provided by many onsite vendors. Bring chairs and blankets, but coolers are not allowed.

Pickleball Pals – June 16

As one of the fastest growing sports in America – and popular with adults and kids of all ages – this Pickleball event features a lesson followed by real-time play. The event is held from 10am-noon at New Century Fieldhouse (551 New Century Parkway).

Father’s Day Events – June 18

At Ryan Lawn & Tree, we salute dads! So check out these Father’s Day events in Kansas City:

  • Dads receive a complimentary admission to the Kansas City Zoo.
  • Dad’s Belly Flop Contest at Oceans of Fun, contest starts at 2pm.
  • Dads get a free Max Pak Pass at Paradise Park, where kids can make memorable handmade art projects for dad and grandpa in the Discovery Play Art Studio.

Future Stages Festival – June 25

Held at the Kauffman Center for Performing Arts, this free one-day festival helps adults and youth experience the arts by inviting them to experience a diverse range of performances and interactive art activities. This event is free for all ages. It runs from 11am-4pm.
The Nelson-Atkins Museum Of Art in Kansas City is a great place to visit.

Independence Day 1860 – July 4

This event is held at the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm from 10am-4pm on July 4th. The event features a recreation of Independence Day in 1860, and includes a reading of the Declaration of Independence, a cannon firing, stagecoach rides, and cooking on a stone stove.

Kansas City Riverfest – July 4

KC Riverfest is held at Berkley Riverfront Park and is the premier Independence Day celebration in the region. Featuring music, food, drink, family fun, and of course fireworks, the event is run along the Missouri river and provides a spectacular view of the fireworks display. The fireworks begin at approximately 9:40pm. Arrive early, as this event attracts thousands of visitors each year.
