Is there any better place to be than Wichita in the summer? Wichita is a great place to live, and it seems like it only gets better in the summer months, with many local attractions offering special themed events as well as unique venues that come to the area. With a host of family-friendly events slated for the month of June and Independence Day, here are some activities that we at Ryan Lawn & Tree think will be especially great!
Home to more than 500 species of 2,500 animals that live in naturally authentic habitats, Sedgwick County Zoo offers many kid-oriented attractions and events that make the zoo a great family place to visit. In the summer months, every Tuesday night is a Twilight Tuesday, where the zoo stays open until 8:30pm and admission is free after 6pm for any visitors who have a voucher from select local Cox Solutions stores.
Within the zoo, a couple prime viewing areas that are popular for families include the Downing Gorilla Forest, where gorillas, primates, birds and other wildlife roam freely and can be viewed from several viewing locales. The Tiger Trek is also a popular area for visitors, to view tigers, red pandas, and deer.
This theater and dance school has been a part of the Wichita community for more than 40 years, providing opportunities for young people to experience the arts first hand through involvement in theater and dance. On June 15, 16, and 23, the Theater & Dance Center offers Wichita Children’s Theater Picnic Theater, where lunch matinee and dinner shows of The Ugly Duckling will be presented. This is a favorite play for children and adults alike. In July, Little Red Riding Hood will be presented on the 13th, 14th, and 21st.
Covering nearly 20 acres at 701 Amidon Street in Wichita, Botanica is a collection of themed gardens that include a butterfly garden, a tropical greenhouse, a juniper garden, a rose garden, a rock garden, and almost 15 additional gardens. A large children’s garden is also provided allowing children to get a hands-on experience with native and non-native plants and fauna. And on Thursday in June, Botanica offers a Family Game Night at the gardens, where families engage in friendly games of competition within the garden setting.
A family-friendly running event, the Wichita Stars & Stripes 5K & Lil’ Firecracker Mile Run features patriotic music, events, and food as the runners compete or run for fun. The race will be held at Cessna Stadium (1845 Fairmount Street).
The Wichita Parks Foundation is sponsoring a 4th of July fireworks event on the Hyatt Regency Wichita (400 West Waterman), with a live band playing from 7:30 to 9:30pm. The fireworks display will begin around 9:45pm, lasting about 24 minutes.
